The usage by politicians is nothing more than arrogance with a superfluous air of grandness, demonstrating how deep their lack of knowledge is.
However, the perpetuation persists in schools of all grades, including universities; the worst of them are journalists who repeat, like parrots, the ignorance of the first colonists arriving on the American CONTINENT several centuries ago.
Initially, it was forgivable to them, as they lacked education and came from different continents, particularly Europe. Their minds had no geographical conception of the mainland, and their ignorance unified with the desires of colonizing an empire surpassed through several generations this mal conception of the significance of this word.
To me, the use of the word American to demonym the inhabitants of the United States debilitate the cultural spectrum of those who have it as a part of their vocabulary.
It should be Unistazen. (Uni – ted / sta – te / citi – zen). In Spanish is easier to replace for some writers and journalists to “estadounidenses,” but ignorance prevails above any rung of social status.
